Hellenic Police Enhance Protection After Demonstrations Against Israel Passenger Liner

Hellenic officials have dramatically enhanced safety arrangements at multiple key harbors in an effort to prevent demonstrators from reaching a cruise liner transporting visitors from Israel on an 11-day voyage around the Mediterranean.

Recent Demonstrations Trigger Enhanced Protection

The heightened security at the Peloponnesian ports followed recent demonstrations when the cruise vessel docked at Kalamata in the past few days. Earlier, travelers aboard the same vessel were unable to leave the ship and the ship was forced to divert to Cyprus after local residents staged a protest on the Cycladic island of Syros.

"In spite of the truce, Israel is persisting with its attacks in Gaza," remarked a schoolteacher who joined the Kalamata protest. "Innocent, unarmed civilians are being killed."

Passenger Encounter and Public Opinion

Aboard the ship, travelers witnessed as crowds in Kalamata chanted: "You need the police, you're not welcome in Greece."

Yannis Sifanakis, who worked throughout summer arranging anti-war protests across Greece, stated: "Israeli visitors who endorse the decisions of their administration aren't embraced here."

International Context and Foreign Ties

An international relations expert clarified: "Because of regional nearness and our historical connections with the Middle East, the average Greek is more sensitive to what is occurring in Gaza than the average central or north European."

"The Hellenic Republic is in a difficult position," he continued. "Israel is much more important for us as an partner than it is for many European nations."

Economic and Tourism Consequences

Official data indicate that more than 600,000 tourists from Israel visited Greece in 2024, with estimates of even higher numbers this year. This substantial influx highlights the significantly enhanced ties between the both states since the 1980s, when Greek leadership maintained a strongly supportive position toward Palestine.

Strategic Alliance and Geographic Considerations

For the Greek government, Israel constitutes not only a important balance to regional rival Turkey but also grants the additional advantage of improved diplomatic access to Washington.

"The Hellenic Republic is not going to endanger its connections with Israel," stated the analyst. "However from a compassionate viewpoint we must be more accepting, more balanced, more committed to demonstrate the wrongdoings of Israel in Gaza."

Expanding Demonstration Campaign and International Response

The scale of the Greek protest movement has surprised Israeli authorities. Recently, the country's foreign ministry advised visitors to maintain a low profile, while local media characterized Athens as a "former paradise" due to protest markings appearing on buildings in the city center.

The secretary-general of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece expressed concern: "Certainly we're worried. The kind of discourse we're experiencing can rapidly transform into antisemitic."

Upcoming Developments and Demands

Gradually, opponents have targeted Athens' tight relationships with Israel. As many as 5,000 people recently journeyed to Crete to call for the shutdown of the Souda Bay naval base, a NATO base that since the outbreak of war in Gaza has served as a important supply station for US naval vessels, fighter planes and boats destined for Israel.

"We have achieved successes," declared a movement organizer. "Our main demand, currently, is to cease all cooperation with Israel."
