Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying these medications need to be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the way of the drugs explains the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
