Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
